RULER Online
The Goal:
Create an online learning platform to support school districts in promoting emotional intelligence for students, teachers, and staff.

The Team:
I was Product Owner, Lead Researcher, and Creative Director, working with an in-house Product Designer, a Project Manager, and several contractors for design, development, and media production.

Results:
RULER Online launched the summer right before the 2018-2019 school year, 3 months ahead of schedule, starting with a presentation at the Building Learning Communities conference, where I conducted the first live group Mood Meter. Within the first month, over a thousand schools train in RULER (across all 50 states and a handful of other countries) had been invited to participate into the inaugural first year launch of the platform.

Discovery + Definition:
I met with teachers and administrators remotely and on-site, documenting their journey from initial training to implementation of the RULER program in schools.
I also had 10+ years of RULER trainee data from schools and districts all over the world. I was able to map the different ways that the program got rolled out over the typical 3 years.
I organized a design sprint with stakeholders and the lead engineers where we could zero in on key experiences on the product map, and do some early prototyping and testing.

The Work:
The launch of the online platform also required extensive updates to the multimedia learning materials that would make up most of the content. I outlined a handful of video series, including on-site interviews at schools with adults and children, “talking head” skill-building montages, as well as demonstrations of our tools in use.
I also collaborated with a photographer to produce a branded, multi-use photo library with as much diverse representation as possible.
I also directed the rebrand of RULER itself, starting with a logo to more clearly convey the core idea behind the product and bring a new level of professionalism to our visual identity.

Putting it All Together:
This product required a big lift from a wide array of contributors in order to build even the first iterations of learning modules and interactive classroom tools.
Our team proved successful because of all the design documentation produced ahead to time. Clickable prototypes allowed us to test for usability early and often, focusing on overall navigation, learning modules activities, and the ever-present emotion-mapping app, the Mood Meter.
Nine months from the start of coding, we had a fully testable platform, including school-level features for gathering key data such as the staff’s desired school climate. Individuals could also get a reading of a room’s emotional temperature using the group Mood Meter feature.
